NERF’s branding relies on the themes of adventure, excitement, and competition. A crucial part of many people’s lives, with an intense competitive scene, NERF's branding is built on energy.
That’s why it’s NERF or nothin'.
So when the combination of NERF and Backpacks was pitched, the work began to design something for the “pros” out there.
The goal was to design a bag that invoked NERF’s brand in a way that, while still adventurous, steered away from overtly juvenile. The final iteration of sketches incorporated the orange, blue and grey that NERF is known best for.

Designing a bag for NERF, specifically, posed several challenging factors. NERF has many branches—Z-Strike, Elite, Rebelle—all of which have differing color schemes. However, the blue-and-orange were the iconic standouts of the brand. Color alone does not make good branding. NERF is built to be fun, and with their Velcro darts and blooming competitive scene, a direction for creation emerged.
Learning to produce complex soft goods by hand was an invaluable learning opportunity.
